ITIL is the industry set of best-practices demonstrating effective corporate governance of IT service management (BS15000, ISO20000, SOX, COBIT). It is paramount that organisations demonstrate that their current operating environment is consistent with the auditable baseline set out in the corporate governance records.

ITIL is concerned with the association of procedures to knowledge, business processes, services and controls.  More often than not this information is dynamic as opposed to static therefore the current environment will always be where procedure management and inspection should be undertaken, as the CMDB as a baseline will only ever be a historical snapshot of the enterprise. 

The CMDB is the corner stone of any ITIL based process which in itself must adhere to auditing practices, which if neither complete nor accurate will cause more problems than it was intended to solve.  It is also about knowing what shouldn’t be there and where the risks may be in terms of processes, infrastructure and operations. The CMDB should therefore not be just what should be but what is actually there.

A CMDB needs to be structured across a complex distributed environment where each silo can provide a subset of the data. This data can then be leveraged to establish the linkage between sources and derive the metadata to gain a detail view of an organisation. Rendering the metadata in a multiple dimension logical view provides a presentation layer to the end user and allows a higher degree of insight.

To ensure the value of a CMDB regular and timely snapshots of the entire enterprise ecosystem are essential.
